Barbs are very colorful and hardy species among the aquatic fish group. They are popular to aquarists because of their schooling features. Since they are very much active in tank, their mates should have similar characteristics. Because of their schooling habits, a larger aquarium is preferable for their healthy lives. Usually they are kept in groups. Because of their active, hardy and brightly colored schooling fish nature, they create a mesmerizing environment inside the tank. They are found in multiple colors. They love to play and show their activities. Sometimes they are known for fin nippers also. This feature will not harm other fishes if you can keep them in right tank.
Tank:
Barbs are very much active and they need adequate space to hang around. A 25 gallon tank is suitable for 5-6 barbs. Since they are schooling fish, sufficient space inside the tank will enhance their activities together. Substrate of the tank can de designed with rocks and cobbles which will work as shelter for them. Filter should be used which generates low flow that will create same natural environment for barbs.
Water Quality:
Barbs are hardy enough to survive in critical conditions. However, there are few researches on which parameters they can grow healthy lives. Barbs are usually comfortable between 68º-80º F water temperatures. There are few exceptions also where barbs can live in cooler water too. Acceptable pH level for barb is 6-7.5.
Feeding:
As omnivorous fish barbs are fond of various foods like pellets, flakes, frozen food and brine shrimp. Barbs should be feed once or twice daily. Feeding cycle and amount depends on the size of the barbs. Feed them as much as they can eat by 1-2 minutes of time.
Behavior:
As barbs are schooling fish, they should be kept in group. Many barbs establish communication with others by nipping each other. In that case, avoid fishes in your barbs tank which are slow moving and long finned fish.
Monitor Health:
Every species should be monitored routinely to ensure good health conditions. There are few signs of healthy barbs and you should be aware of their good health. A healthy barb eats vigorously, takes part in active swimming, has clear breathing, clear eyes and free of parasites.
Breeding:
To breed barb it is essential to establish the same habitat as it enjoys naturally. Add proper hiding places by plants or other decors. For breeding maintain appropriate temperature. At the same time, ensure balanced diet for your barbs. Intake of adequate protein will enhance breeding behavior.
Tank Maintenance:
Partial water change upto 25% is recommended for barbs tank. There should be continuous water test by using kits to check existence of ammonia and nitrites. Use chlorinator before pouring new tap water into the tank. Check weekly whether there is any blockage in filtration systems. If filter needs to wash don’t use tap water. Using tap water will remove all the necessary bacteria from the filter. Rather, rinsed filter in that water which has been removed from tank as part of weekly maintenance.
