A Beginners' Guide To Start First Aquarium

Aquarium is such a hobby which needs passion. It will enhance your love for fish keeping. You will be drawn to the serene beauty of this underwater world. This hobby will reduce your stress and increase your joy. If you are ready to embrace this hobby, here are the guidelines to follow:

  1. Decide which type of fish you want to keep in your tank: At first you need to decide which type of fish you want to keep in your aquarium. Size and shape of your tank depend on the categories of fish. For example, if you like neon tetra, you need a medium size tank (36-42 inch) to give adequate space for them for moving and schooling. If you want to keep shrimp, you can manage it in a very small tank also. So, its very important to decide which types of fish you want to keep in your aquarium.

  1. Procure a tank or make a tank by yourself: You can buy a tank from the shop as per your desired size and shape. Otherwise, you may go for make a tank by yourself.   1. Arrange necessary materials: Once you have got your tank, you are just a bit away from starting your aquarium hobby. You need to buy a water filter (preferably HOB), light & water heater. If you plan for planted aquarium, additionally you need to buy soil, aquascaping materials and aquatic plants. Once you are ready with all the materials, start placing all of them in your aquarium step by step. There are lots of youtube tutorials available on youtube.

Establish the Nitrogen Cycle: The nitrogen cycle is a crucial biological process that establishes a balance of beneficial bacteria in your aquarium, converting toxic ammonia into less harmful compounds. To kickstart the nitrogen cycle, add a source of ammonia, such as fish food or pure ammonia, and monitor water parameters using a test kit. Be patient, as the cycling process can take several weeks to complete.

  1. Introduce Fish Gradually: Once your aquarium has completed the nitrogen cycle and water parameters are stable, it’s time to introduce your fish. Start with a small number of hardy fish species, such as guppies or danios, to allow the aquarium to adjust to its new inhabitants. Avoid overcrowding the tank, as it can lead to increased stress and aggression among fish.
  2. Maintain Water Quality: Regular maintenance is essential for the health and longevity of your aquarium inhabitants. Perform weekly water changes to remove waste and replenish essential nutrients. Monitor water parameters regularly and adjust filtration and lighting as needed. Additionally, clean the tank glass, substrate, and decorations to prevent the buildup of algae and debris.
